{"id":1060,"date":"2011-11-28T05:20:35","date_gmt":"2011-11-28T10:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.holypotato.net\/?p=1060"},"modified":"2011-11-28T06:07:30","modified_gmt":"2011-11-28T11:07:30","slug":"the-social-status-of-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.holypotato.net\/?p=1060","title":{"rendered":"The Social Status of Scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A bit of  a strange article in the Globe says that: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/national\/time-to-lead\/building-innovation-in-canada\/kick-starting-innovation-by-increasing-the-social-status-of-scientists\/article2248532\/\">&#8220;Mr. Cowen believes that overcoming stagnation will require an increase in the social status of scientists relative to other professions, so that our best and brightest will not prefer law or finance or view university science and math as a prerequisite for careers in medicine or dentistry.&#8221;<\/a> I don&#8217;t think the <em>social status <\/em>of scientists is the problem, unless that&#8217;s code for &#8220;paying them better and revamping the career path.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now, I could probably get behind a &#8220;science tax&#8221; but I don&#8217;t think it has a snowball&#8217;s chance in hell in the real world.
